On a day for trick-or-treating, the NHS Culinary classes were only serving up treats.

Culinary teacher Ms. Heather Payne said her students made donut muffins and two new kinds of coffee: iced caramel macchiato and s’mores frappe in honor of Halloween.

Students offer a coffee bar to faculty and staff each week.

“I send out the order form in advance, and the orders are due by a certain day,” she said. “Once I have the orders I know what supplies to get from the store.”

The students prepare the coffee and the treats during class the day before. So far, the most popular orders are the caramel frappes and lattes.

The recipes are Ms. Payne’s since the students are beginners. But Ms. Payne allows students to experiment making their own coffee creations.

“The students come up with ideas for figuring out what goes best with the coffee,” she said.

This week, Ms. Payne said 60 orders were placed, which is more than ever before.

“In the beginning it was difficult,” she said. “We wanted to get them out in a timely manner, and the students didn’t know where all the classrooms were. But now they are getting better.”

By the end of the year, students will have their own culinary creations on the menu.

Ms. Payne said she loves the way the school supports the culinary program.

“The kids love making these, and they love the feedback they receive,” she said.
