Dragon Echo Staff Report
Meet two of the students behind this year’s homecoming festivities: Evelynn Precella and Raquel Pasillas.
As community service co-chairs for STUCO, Evelynn and Raquel have been instrumental in planning Spirit Week – which includes picking the theme days, helping with Homecoming Court elections and planning the dance. The planning started in late July, early August.
The girls said choosing the individual theme days can be tricky, because they try to avoid choosing the same theme days that will be used later this year by DASH (Drugs, Alcohol, Safety and Health) for Red Ribbon Week and Hearty Heart.
“We don’t want to use their same ideas for theme days,” Evelynn said. “So it can be challenging to come up with something new.”
The theme days for Spirit Week were: Tacky Tourist/ Hawaiian Day, Twin Day, College Shirt Day, “All that Jazz” Day and Spirit Day.
The theme for the dance is Roaring 20’s – honoring both the 1920’s and the rapidly approaching 2020, which will be the year this year’s seniors will graduate.
As seniors, it has been meaningful to plan something for the whole school to enjoy.
Picking out the roses, sash and crown for the Homecoming Queen was one of Evelynn’s favorite parts of the process, along with picking out decorations for the dance.
“Planning something like this lets you express yourself and be part of a community of people who also feel excited and happy about Homecoming,” Raquel said.
