Junior English Teacher Darius Tubbs was selected as the September teacher of the month for NHS.

This came as no surprise to his students, who are inspired and motivated by him daily.

Tubbs had a teacher in the 10th grade who inspired him to become a teacher.

“His love for the material and his enthusiasm were infectious,” Tubbs said. “That’s what directed my life to the path of an educator.”

Another inspiration for Tubbs may come as a surprise to some people.

“I know it sounds ridiculous, but one of the biggest impacts on my life came from a fictional teacher: Yoda from Star Wars,” Tubbs said. “He’s a great example of everything we want a teacher to be. He is patient, wise, loving, there when you need him. I always respected and admired him.”

Tubbs has been teaching at NHS for seven years.

He said the biggest difference between his years as a student and his years as a teacher, is that students were more respectful when he was in school.

“The students also didn’t have the tech knowledge that students have now,” he said. “They had to pay attention in class, because there wasn’t anything else to do.”

NHS Principal Dr. Rom Crespo said the person who nominated Tubbs described him as “an excellent teacher always willing to go above and beyond for his students.”

“He is willing to do whatever he can to help students succeed,” Crespo said, quoting from the nomination form. “He consistently comes early and stays late to make sure his lessons are well-prepared and interactive for his students.”
