Mrs. Margie Chumbley has been teaching and subbing longer than the Nacogdoches High School building has been standing.
One of the most requested subs in the district, Mrs. Chumbley has years of experience that help her do a great job.
“I started teaching in 1963,” she said. “I’ve been subbing since 1987.”
Although she used to sub for all levels, now she only subs for middle school, high school and the alternative school.
Her favorite subjects to sub for are Language Arts, Health and Science.
Ms. Chumbley has a policy that makes her good at what she does.
“I’m firm, fair and friendly,” she said. “Love, and loving what I do are the secrets to my success.”
Ms. Chumbley said she loves teaching, helping and caring.
One of her favorite memories of subbing happened in 1989. She was substituting for an elementary school that was amazing for the first two weeks … but then the students started acting up.
“One day I turned on the intercom so the principal could hear the class,” she said.
Something interesting people might not know about Mrs. Chumbley, is that she has four adult children, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was married for 58 years. Her husband died two years ago from cancer.
“I love doing what I do,” she said. “Subbing and helping children hold a special place in my heart and keep me going.”
