Pink Out is a one-week event each October meant to bring breast cancer awareness to NHS.

On Sunday, Oct. 13 more than 20 National Honor Society members spent most of the day decorating the school from top to bottom. Pink banners filled the hallway. Posters lined the walls. Tissue paper pompoms hung from the light fixtures.

NHS Co-Sponsor Ms. Roya Dinbali said it’s all meant to get students excited when they arrive at school Monday morning the week of Pink Out.

“I’m extra,” she said. “I’d like the whole school to be painted bubble gum pink.”

Although the whole school may not be bubble gum pink, the decorations definitely make a statement and have an impact.

“It’s for a good cause, and it makes students happy to see the decorations,” Dinbali said. National Honor Society and several other groups designed Pink Out shirts for students to wear to the Pink Out pep rally and football game. Most other sports also host a pink out game or meet at some point in the year.

Dr. Katherine Whitbeck, STUCO sponsor, said STUCO members made pink paper ribbons that the whole school was invited to decorate. The ribbons are hung throughout the school.

“Pink out honors those who have or who had breast cancer,” she said. “It also raises awareness and promotes prevention.”

Dr. Whitbeck said breast cancer is the most common cancer for women, which is why awareness and prevention are so important.
