Media takes the society’s undivided attention these days. It has a great impact on everyone’s lives and as Malcolm X says - “The media is the most powerful entity on earth.”

Being aware of this, NHS’s principal, Dr. Crespo, came up with the idea of video announcements, now known as the The Dragon News is produced in a class taught by Mr. Jacob Lusk.

“Students might get bored listening to the announcements so this year we decided to spice things up,” Miguel Santoyo said. Miguel is the main editor, and he and Connor Whitton are the co-hosts of “Dragon News.”

This is not the first time NHS has had video announcements. What makes the “Dragon News” today different from previous years is a more sophisticated technology. Now the set-up is much more advanced.

“When students see that this whole thing is run and operated by students, they tend to pay more attention to the videos,” Miguel said.

Mr. Lusk is the teacher who makes sure that everything is as it should be and oversees what the students of the crew do.

Omar Gonzalez, the scriptwriter and equipment manager said, “We take the regular announcements and try to make them more interesting for the students.”

The whole crew is made of eleven students and even though each of them has his or her own role, everyone does a little bit of everything.

The school can only see the highlight of the work those students do. What goes on behind the scenes is a long process with a lot of work that each of the students do with passion. It all starts with writing the script and setting up the workplace. While the videos are being recorded, the graphic design students are working on the graphics. Meanwhile Colton Skinner and Isaiah Wright work on the time rewind videos sent to them by David Mandel.

The crew has become one solid team because they attend the same class, but what keeps them even closer together, they say, is the power of friendship.

As another student was describing how much fun they have as a group, Connor said, “We have a lot of inside jokes.”

“It is totally worthy to be here,” Omar said.

If anyone is interested in joining the media crew, they are more than welcome to do so. It does not matter if it is to gain experience in media or just to have fun.
