School spirit has reached a whole new level at Dragon Stadium on Friday nights, where yell leaders are now firing up the crowd and cheering on the team.

Fans can’t possibly miss NHS Juniors Braxton Roberts, Mason Howell, Simon Davis and Lane Vanscoder, who are dressed in black-and-gold painted overalls and beating metal trash cans on the sidelines. They run with flags after each Dragon touchdown, and they keep the energy level high.

Braxton Roberts said Cheer sponsor Ms. Tori Brown had the idea of adding yell leaders to the games.

“The first week of school Ms. Brown approached me about running the flags whenever our team scores,” Braxton said. “So the guys and I got creative, bought overalls, and it ran from there.”

Mason said the yell leaders have had a great response from the community.

“Many people have approached us outside football games telling us that we’re doing a good thing, and they love what we’re doing,” he said.

Braxton added, “At first the fans were confused, but now they strongly support us. No matter the score of the game, we can always hear people in the bleachers yelling our names and telling us to pound the trash cans.”

Mason and Braxton said that after they graduate there will be try-outs for yell leaders. Yell leaders attend every home and away game, and they plan to attend basketball games, too.
