Students at NHS have no shortage of opportunities to get involved and give back.

The Key Club is one of the busiest service organizations on campus. In fact, students in Key Club were spread out all over town Saturday at the Alzheimer’s Walk, the Dragon Swim Meet and the stadium clean-up at Dragon Stadium following Friday night’s football game.

Treasurer Sarah Stott said Key Club is based on service and trying to make the community better.

“We have 73 students and six officers,” she said. “As treasurer, I take care of all fund-raising and make sure we spend our money wisely.”

Braxton Roberts is Key Club president. He said the president and vice president keep track of all that’s going on and make students aware of activities and volunteer opportunities.

“We are student-led,” he said. “We have a sponsor, but we are in control of our activities.”

Students are good about signing up, Braxton said.

“They are enthusiastic about helping out,” he said. “We usually have pretty good numbers at our events we volunteer for.”

Sarah said participation is increasing this year.

Meetings are every other Tuesday, and Braxton said the meetings are important because they keep everyone on the same page, so all members know what’s happening.

“People retain information better when you meet face-to-face,” he said.

Braxton said Key Club has participated in about 15 activities already this year.

“We plan to do many more,” he said.

Key Club members help set up for the Alzheimer’s Walk Saturday. They served as time-keepers at the Swim Meet, and they clean up the stadium after every home game.

“Little things like this make a big difference,” Braxton said.

Sarah said there are a wide variety of options for members to sign up for, so everyone is able to find something that works with their schedule and their interests.

Relay for Life is one of the biggest activities planned for later this year.

Sarah and Braxton said they appreciate what the Key Club members do to make NHS and Nacogdoches a better place.

Ms. Rebecca Jaramillo is the club sponsor. For information about how to join, go to Room 104.
